The episode begins with a tournament in King's Landing to celebrate Joffrey Baratheon's name day. Tyrion Lannister arrives at King's Landing as the new Hand of the King, appointed by his father Tywin Lannister. Tyrion clashes with Cersei over her decisions, and reveals that he knows about her incestuous relationship with Jaime Lannister.
In Winterfell, Bran Stark has a dream in which he sees through the eyes of his direwolf Summer. He also sees a red comet in the sky, which Osha, a wildling captive, interprets as a sign of dragons. Bran acts as the lord of Winterfell in Robb Stark's absence, and listens to the complaints of his people.
In the Red Waste, Daenerys Targaryen leads her khalasar across the desert, looking for food and water. She sends her bloodriders to scout for signs of civilization. One of them returns with his horse's head in a bag, a message from an unknown enemy.
At Dragonstone, Stannis Baratheon declares himself as the rightful king of Westeros, and rejects Robb Stark's offer of an alliance. He is influenced by Melisandre, a red priestess who worships a god called R'hllor. Stannis burns the statues of the Seven, the gods of Westeros, as a sign of his conversion to R'hllor. He also plans to use Melisandre's magic to defeat his enemies.
Davos Seaworth, Stannis' loyal adviser and former smuggler, tries to convince Stannis to make peace with his younger brother Renly Baratheon, who also claims the throne. He also recruits Salladhor Saan, a pirate lord and his old friend, to join Stannis' navy.
At Craster's Keep, Jon Snow and other members of the Night's Watch meet Craster, a wildling who marries his daughters and gives his sons to the White Walkers. Jon is disgusted by Craster's lifestyle, and suspects that he is hiding something from them.
At Pyke, Theon Greyjoy returns to his home after nine years as a hostage of the Starks. He reunites with his father Balon Greyjoy, who is preparing to rebel against the Iron Throne. Balon rejects Theon's proposal to ally with Robb Stark, and mocks him for being a Stark loyalist. He also reveals that he plans to attack the North while Robb is busy fighting the Lannisters.
The episode ends with Arya Stark, who is disguised as a boy and traveling with a group of Night's Watch recruits. She befriends Gendry, a blacksmith's apprentice who is secretly the bastard son of Robert Baratheon. She also reveals her true identity to him, after he saves her from being discovered by a group of gold cloaks sent by Joffrey to kill Robert's bastards.
